Top 5 Dry Needling Questions

What is it?

Dry needling is a skilled intervention used by healthcare professionals (where allowed by state law) in the management of neuromuscular conditions and movement dysfunctions. A thin needle is inserted through the skin to stimulate a healing response of underlying tissue.

When is it used?

Muscle stiffness, sprains and strains, muscle activation, swelling reduction, recovery, and pain control are some common examples. Research continues to look at how dry needling works in both acute and chronic conditions.

How is it different from acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is based in eastern philosophies while dry needling is rooted in western medicine. There is overlap between the two. However, the application of the tool is what makes it different between professions.

What does it feel like?

Most of the time, people don’t notice the needle being inserted into the skin until it hits the targeted tissue. Some common sensations include, muscle twitch, mild cramping, or relaxation.

Should it be part of my treatment?

Everyone is a unique individual. Even when people have the same condition, their rehabilitation process will be different. We use clinical experience, research, and client input to determine when an individual may benefit from dry needling. Work with your physical therapist, athletic trainer, and/or physician to determine if it is right for you.
