Anatomy is not Physiology

A writer knows more than words, but can’t write without them.

A chef knows more than ingredients, but can’t cook without them.

A mechanic knows more than engine parts, but can’t repair without them.

A rehab specialist must know more than anatomy, but can’t work without it.

Understanding only what makes up a system does not allow for an understanding of how it works. A strong foundation in anatomy is necessary, but not sufficient, in rehabilitative practice.

We as clinicians specialize in biomechanics: the outward manifestation of functional anatomy - how the book reads - how the meal tastes - how the car drives.

Yet, we overlook physiology: the complex interactions that enable function - the interactions between grammar, syntax, and style - the interactions between ingredients, time, and temperature - the way the engine works.
